Choosing Happiness?

So often people will tell those who are going through rough times to just ‘choose happiness’. What does this mean? Am Iscreen-shot-2017-02-11-at-10-50-42-am not allowed to be sad? Does it make me less of a human being if I feel depressed? Many of these people will feel as if they are being asked to do the impossible for their given situation. This can lead them further into depressive areas.

Clinical depression is very real and you cannot tell someone fighting this to get over it or just be happy. This is not the focus of my post today. For those in this area, I ask you to be kind to them and support them as they struggle to find their way with professional assistance.

For the last few years, I have noticed that I am happier than I have ever been in my life. There are those who question this, especially since I have a very debilitating chronic illness. However, I speak the truth.

My illness is still very much present and persistent in my life. I continue to have very real struggles financially due to this disease as well. Yet, I am still happy. I do not walk around smiling and laughing 24/7.  However, there is always a sense of happiness and peace within.

Since I have had the awareness of this state of being, I have pondered when and how it first started. I have not been able screen-shot-2017-02-11-at-10-54-15-amto pinpoint it. Thankfully, I do not need to. I have learned to accept it.

I do not need to find happiness in another person. It is found within myself. During one of my ponderances, I realized that I did not consciously choose happiness. I chose to relinquish fear and negativity, seeking instead, to discover the truths of life.

It is my opinion that one does not need to seek to participate in happy-inducing activities to find a peaceful state of being. Eliminate that which is negative and fear-inducing from your lives. By-pass those ugly, hateful posts on social media, or remove the posters of such things from your contact list altogether. Sit in the quiet and stillness of nature or listen to meditative music and look within you. See the beauty that is there. Find the calm and peace that only you can feel. Center yourself there and allow it to begin taking hold in all aspects of your life.

This is not a religion, but can enhance your individual religious experiences and draw you closer to the god you worship. Look within to find the answers you seek. They are there. Let go of the fear, the negativity, the ugliness that is persistently vying for your soul. Seek the truths and they will be yours.
